Presentation Sisters came to San Francisco to provide education to children during the California gold rush; the first school opened on Green Street within months of their arrival in 1854. Two more schools quickly followed, in 1856 at Powell and Lombard Streets, and in 1869 at Taylor and Ellis Streets. As the Bay Area continued to grow, the Sisters went on to open St. Joseph Grammar School and High School (later renamed Presentation High) in Berkeley in 1869 and St. Joseph Grammar School in Sonoma; and they assumed operation of St. Mary Elementary School in Gilroy in 1890.
The 1906 earthquake had a devastating effect on many of the Presentation schools, reducing those in San Francisco to rubble. As new schools were built, some Sisters began to teach in and administer parish schools across the Bay Area, often living in convents on the parish grounds.
This was an era of immense growth as the Sisters sponsored, taught in, administered, and served in other positions at schools throughout the western United States, including Presentation High School, San Francisco (1915-1991); Bishop Conaty Memorial High School (1923-1977); and Our Lady of Loretto High School (1949-1973). See the timeline below for more historical details.
Alumni of these schools remain close, gathering often and connecting on social media. They frequently reflect on the immense impact the Sisters had in their lives as young people, and on the adults they became. The Sisters, too, remember their teaching years as some of their happiest; visits to Presentation High School in San Jose, the only Presentation high school in the United States, keep them connected to this ministry that drew the first Presentation Sisters to San Francisco.
