December and January brought two momentous opportunities to celebrate Sister Kieran O’Connor.
On December 18, 2021 Sister Kieran celebrated her 100th birthday! The day began at 8:00 am with a Mass celebrated by Rev. Robert Scholla, S.J, who had been her pupil! In attendance were many Sisters and some friends. In the afternoon there was a party, attended by numerous Sisters, friends and former students. Sister Kieran taught quite a few students who went on to become fellow Sisters, five of whom attended her birthday celebration. Virginia Espinal was in the first class Sister Kieran taught, at Cathedral. Sisters Rita Jovick, Darlene Terry, Ellen Cafferty, Virginia Espinal, and Bernice Gotelli (pictured, L-R, with Fr. Scholla and Sister Kieran, seated) are all her former students.
On January 3, 2022 Sister Kieran celebrated her 80th Profession Anniversary with a beautiful Mass celebrated by Rev. Brad Mills, S.J., the son of a teacher with whom Sister Kieran once taught. This Mass was followed by a reception attended by Sisters and friends.
Sister Kieran entered the Sisters of the Presentation, San Francisco in 1939 following her graduation from the Academy of the Presentation. She pronounced her first vows in 1942. Her life ministry has been education, and she has taken great joy in teaching. Over the past eighty years, she has taught and served as an administrator in many of the Presentation Schools in California including Saint Agnes and Saint Anne Schools in San Francisco and Saint Patrick and Saint Christopher Schools in San Jose. She also opened Saint Catherine School in Morgan Hill, where she served as principal. She has won numerous awards for work as an educator and retired from teaching in 2018. Sister Kieran has a special gift for connecting with people and continues to stay in touch with many students and friends.
