Ever since she could remember, Sister Paula Baker dreamed of being a nurse and a mother. That goal remained constant until she was a junior in high school and God’s Spirit gently intervened. A few years before this her family had outgrown their tiny east Los Angeles home, which launched a move to a new city, a new home, a new school, and an introduction to the Sisters of the Presentation. Eventually God beckoned Sister Paula from southern California to the northern part of the state to serve in what was then a very rural Morgan Hill. After spending delightful years as elementary principal, she was invited to consider ministry at the local Catholic hospital where she would develop an Outreach Program for new mothers who were vulnerable and marginalized. Having completed her six-year term on Congregational Leadership, Sister Paula resides in Morgan Hill where she continues to be involved in the parish and the community. Although she has had to hang up her guitar, she engages in various other activities that enrich and energize her: morning walks, puppy ears and kitty purrs, horses’ neighs and children’s squeals, voices of long-time friends and smiles that radiate, good books and kind deeds. So much to remind her every day of the words of Meister Eckhart: “Every single creature is full of God and is a book about God.” How wonderful is that! Yes, we do know that all things work to good for those who love God.
