In a stirring tribute to their heritage, the Sisters of the Presentation San Francisco celebrated a significant milestone on March 10th, 1985, with the dedication of the Gym at Presentation High School, San Jose. Sister Margaret Cafferty, Congregational President, delivered a poignant speech at the ceremony, embodying the values and mission of the Presentation Sisters. Alongside her were Sister M. Claude Power and Monsignor Norman Allen, Vicar General of the Diocese of San Jose, witnessing Father Joseph Milani, Chancellor of the Diocese of San Jose, deliver an address that echoed the spirit of collaboration and dedication to education. This event marked not only the physical dedication of a space but also the reaffirmation of the Sisters' enduring commitment to their roots and the communities they serve.

This month Presentation Roots is focusing on Nicaragua, where Sister Rachel worked on a mission with Maryknoll Sisters. In her words: "I stayed on for 14 years, wearing many hats that made life full, challenging, and most interesting." Sister Rachel passed away in 2022. In 1965, when Sisters were preparing to begin a mission to Ocosingo, Mexico some of them took horseback riding lessons. In these pictures former members groom horses and practice riding. Note that they have pants with their habits to make riding easier.
With the beginning of a new school year, the Archives recall St. John Vianney School in San Jose, which opened September 7, 1954. The Sisters of the Presentation taught there until 2017, graduating more than 3,000 students. Enjoy this issue, including several photos from 1954-1958.
Before the current Motherhouse at 2340 Turk was built, there were gardens for the 281 Masonic Motherhouse where the current Motherhouse stands. These gardens, also known as the Senior Garden, had a number of walking paths among the plantings. In this edition of Presentation Roots, enjoy pictures of these gardens from the 1950s and 1960s.
Presentation College opened in 1957. It served as a novitiate through the late 1960's. In the early 1970s the name was changed to Presentation Center, and it became a spiritual retreat and conference center. Presentation Center was also devoted to environmental education. For many years the Sisters spent summer vacation at their retreat house, St. Katherine's, in Moss Beach. This issue of Presentation Roots includes a variety of photos and information about what such a vacation looked like over the years.

The Sisters of the Presentation have celebrated Earth Day at many different locations, such as Presentation Center and Moss Beach. Wherever the celebration is held, prayers and readings on the importance of caring for the Earth are the focus of the celebration, along with outdoor activities.
