Bishop George Pallipparambil of the Diocese of Miao, India celebrated Mass at the Motherhouse on Wednesday, July 19. He was accompanied by Deacon Rory Desmond of San Francisco, and Presentation Associate Nanette Miller who facilitated the visit. After breakfast with the Sisters, Bishop George gave a presentation about his home diocese.
The Diocese of Miao is in one of the most impoverished areas of India and populated mostly by ethnic Tibetans. In 20 years the Church there has grown from about 900 members to close to 100,000 members, despite discrimination against Christians, relying on the strength of providing Catholic educational opportunities, access to healthcare, and the presence of a strong laity. Deacon Rory and Nanette have long assisted Bishop George in this work.
The Presentation Sisters helped the diocese last year with an Easter Egg Grant that funded the purchase of sewing machines for women graduating from career training.
Bishop George has always admired the work of the Presentation Sisters and requested the opportunity to visit them on this recent trip to the United States. His homily and presentation had a strong impact on the Sisters, who found him to be very humble and grateful for the donation. He also discussed the issues in Manipur and the recent rapes and murders of Christians, which was very disturbing, and asked for continued prayers and advocacy. Sister Máire Sullivan commented later that she was dismayed to learn of the extreme poverty of Miao, and felt that the funds were definitely needed and put to good use.
We are grateful to everyone who donated to the Easter Appeal that made the Sisters’ donation possible. To learn more about Bishop George’s work, please view the video he shared with the Sisters:
